Question 1.1 - Good design
Stanley LeverLock Tape Measure

This tape measure has a self-locking mechanism to control the retraction of the blade.
Traditional tape measure needs to be locked manually using a locking mechanism to avoid retraction. If missed to lock it and at the same time releasing the tape blade, the tape would retract accidently and may cause injury.
The self-locking mechanism avoids accidental retraction of the tape because the tape is always locked by default. If you release the blade, it won't retract on it's own; you have to press the locking lever to retract the blade.
Question 1.2 - Gaps
* 1. A salt shaker that gives you idea of how much salt is coming out of it
2. A better cable management system for home / office appliances / electronics
3. Universal bird feeder that can be used for most of the birds and for most of the bird foods
4. Silent alarm that would wake up only the intended person instead of everyone in the whole house (or in some cases, to the neighborsJ as well)
5. Silent mouse: current mouse makes clicking noise that becomes annoying in silent places
6. Spoon / small scoop to serve fatty content easily (margarine, cheese etc.); usually fatty content sticks to the spoon and difficult to release
7. Car wiper system that wipes the windshield without the wiping movement because the wiping movement of the wipers is annoying, makes noise, obstructs view every second
8. A better power strip that reduces clutter due to many plugs, many cables of different diameters and lengths
9. Intelligent hanger that would indicate if it is time to wash the cloth hanging on the hanger
10. File / folder organizer that simplifies document management

Question 1.4 - Design for me
I want to design a better salt shaker. The current salt shaker do not give any visualization of how much salt is dispensed; also if the grain size is larger than the hole, the salt shaker won’t dispense any salt; there is problem during humid environment as well when the diameter of the holes are reduced due to accumulation of wet salt grains around the holes.
